Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory air leak in a child presenting with bacterial tracheitis.

چکیده
In developed countries, bacterial tracheitis is an uncommon cause of acute upper airway obstruction in children, but the majority (57–91%) of patients who present with this illness require invasive mechanical ventilation.1-3 Bacterial tracheitis is also associated with numerous complications, including ARDS, air leak syndromes, septic shock, and multiple organ dysfunction.1-3 We describe the first reported case of bacterial tracheitis in a young child complicated by bilateral pneumothoraces and pneumomediastinum that was managed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support in a Patient with Status Asthmaticus
Status asthmaticus is a rare, fatal condition, especially in children. Sometimes respiratory support is insufficient with a mechanical ventilator or medical therapy for patients with status asthmaticus. In such situations, early extracorporeal membrane oxygenation application is a useful method for treating refractory respiratory failure. We report on a case of a six-year-old, male child who un...
متن کاملVaricella associated acute respiratory distress syndrome in an adult patient: an example for extracorporeal respiratory support in Brazilian endemic diseases
A case of a 30 year-old man presenting with severe systemic chickenpox with refractory hypoxemia, central nervous system vasculitis and anuric renal failure is described. Ambulance transportation and support using veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were necessary until the patient recovered. Ultimately, the potential use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support in low-middle ...
متن کاملSuccessful treatment of a life-threatening air leakage, complicating severe abdominal sepsis, with a one-way endobronchial valve.
A 41-year-old woman had a jeopardizing air leak from an alveolar-pleural and transdiaphragmatic fistula with pulmonary cavitation, secondary to a severe postoperative abdominal sepsis. Her condition dramatically improved by introduction, in the lower bronchus, of a one-way endobronchial valve, leading to immediate cessation of air leakage and removal of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and ...
متن کاملSuccessful use of venovenous extracorporeal membranous oxygenation in a 22-month old boy with necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis and septic shock caused by Panton Valentine leukocidin – producing Staphylococcus aureus
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life saving treatment for patients with severe respiratory failure. We present a case of a young child with invasive Panton Valentine leukocidin-producing Staphylococcus aureus infection, which is responsible for severe and invasive infection with a high mortality rate, commonly associated with necrotizing pneumonia. Our patient presented with sep...
